The champions league night was nothing short of the expected as reigning champions ‘Real Madrid’ took a bold step to defending the competition for a record straight three times. Real Madrid started the game on the back foot, as bayern kept knocking on the goal door causing all sorts of problems for the reigning champions and finally broke the dead lock through Joshua kimmich with a thunderous strike from the right after been found in space by bayern loanee from Madrid “JAMES RODRIGUEZ”. Real Madrid however as always can never lie low for long as the European giants once again answered superbly when the cause came calling. A superb half volley from left back Marcelo found the bayern keeper off guard and into the net to level the game.
A tactical change in the second half by Zidane paid off almost immediately as substitute Asensio who came on for Alarcon Isco found the net with a sublime chip past the bayern goalie to put Madrid in the driving seat as they held on for the win at the allianz arena with the second leg at the bernabau yet to be played.
EUROPA LEAGUE – WENGER’S FAREWELL TROPHY
While the champions league was a sight to behold, the world of football is however graced with another big fixture in the Europa league as Arsenal and Atletico Madrid lock horns today in the the competitions semi finals fixture along side Marseille and salzburg.
Wenger who recently set the football world ablaze with a news of his retirement, ending his 22 years of services with the club, will do well to give himself a farewell trophy in the form of the Europa league trophy but standing in their way to the finals are Atletico Madrid. A worthy opponent, they are indeed and despite arsenal laying waste to “Milan” in the competition it would definitely be a tough one for the north London team as they continue their search for a silverware for the season.
It’s only one of two fixtures to determine who goes through but either team could end it for the other in a single leg, like we have all seen in the past. A great fixture it is indeed as Wenger and the gunners take on Diego simeone and the other side of Madrid tonight at Wembley.
